Brighton Road, Purley – Low-Energy Family Housing

This ambitious retrofit and extension project reimagines a pair of early 20th-century semis in Purley to deliver nine high-quality new homes, including five large family duplexes.

Rather than demolish and rebuild, the scheme retains and extends the existing buildings, significantly reducing embodied carbon while upgrading energy performance and spatial efficiency. Carefully considered additions, including modern rear extensions and roof alterations, allowed us to unlock the potential of the site without compromising neighbouring amenity or character.

The new homes include a mix of 1, 2, and 3-bedroom dwellings, all with private terraces or gardens, alongside generous shared landscaping, secure cycle storage, and improved refuse arrangements. Sustainability measures include green roofs, efficient thermal fabric upgrades, and a regraded landscape to enhance daylight and access to lower-ground units.

Working with the existing urban grain and architectural language, the project provides much-needed family housing while setting a precedent for sustainable suburban intensification.
