Furlong Road, N7

A sensitive reconfiguration, refurbishment and extension of a splendid Victorian villa in the St Mary Magdalene Conservation Area, designed to create an accessible, future-proof family home. Located beside the green edge of St Mary Magdalene Gardens, this project forms part of a distinguished terrace of nineteenth-century villas.

Our brief was twofold: to restore clarity and coherence to the home’s layout, and to discreetly integrate a full-height lift to meet the client’s long-term accessibility needs.

We developed a design that replaces the existing rear structures with a single, cohesive extension — a light-filled kitchen, dining and living space overlooking the garden. The new plan removes leftover external spaces, resolves the fragmented floor levels, and brings the principal living areas together into one unified room.

A new lift has been carefully positioned within the massing of the existing rear outrigger. This ensures step-free access to all floors without disrupting the historic plan form or introducing visual harm to the conservation area.

The single-storey rear extension draws on the architectural language of the conservation area, using London stock brickwork and Portland stone detailing to give the new façade clarity and proportion.

Across the project, material choices and layout decisions were made with longevity in mind. The result is a home that is more accessible, more efficient, and more aligned with the character of its historic neighbours, while providing the spatial generosity required for contemporary family life.
