Gordon Avenue, Stanmore – Zero Carbon Family Home

This replacement dwelling in Stanmore was designed for a young family committed to low-energy living. The brief called for a contemporary, contextually sensitive new home that would sit comfortably within the street, while delivering outstanding energy performance and comfort for the long term.

The new house replaces a dated 1960s property that had significant thermal inefficiencies, asbestos, and failing systems. Our proposal introduces a highly insulated, airtight envelope with roof-mounted solar panels, an air source heat pump, EV charging, smart controls, and low-energy lighting throughout. The home is oriented to maximise passive solar gain and minimise energy demand.

With a modest footprint and carefully articulated form, the design balances open-plan living with defined spaces for study and home working. Natural light, ventilation, and strong connections to the south-facing garden were key drivers.

Materials were selected for their performance and simplicity – buff brick, zinc roofing, and vertical timber cladding – combining crisp detailing with warm, tactile finishes. A restrained palette ensures the house integrates with the surrounding architecture without pastiche.

The result is a future-facing, zero carbon-ready home designed to grow with its occupants for many years to come.
